The Cheerio Commercial with Little Gracie: Trying To Understand The Reason Why They Used Her Family

In the national Geographics an article written by Lisa funderburg wrote that the 2014 Cheerios commercial received ” a barrage of negative response.” In 2014 – cheerio commercials hosted a biracial girl by the name of Gracie with her biracial family.  It is said that many negative comments were made because of the used of a biracial family. Many dislike that Cheerios used a black and white family rather than using an all black or all white family. There are many reasons to why the Cheerios commercials were aired. Some good on you they were aired for diversity and to share the love of the Cheerios cereal with everyone.
Cheerios brought this biracial family together and use them for their commercial to show they have a cereal good for ” anybody” no matter what walk of life they come from. Race plays a huge part in many people’s lives today, whether it is home or in school. Although for some races on minor “things”, but to others it seems controllable. Just by the side of a biracial family others began to turn their focus into negative thoughts about the family. When the commercials first aired people did not worry about the healthiness of the cereal but to whom was presenting the cereal.
The population was changing, Cheerios may have. To broadcast and biracial family so that they may bring in more people to the brain. Many can make the argument that they could have used in all white or black family to convey the point with their cereal. That is indeed true but why not try something new, as the world changes you have to change as well. Maybe Cheerios saw that there were a lot of biracial families and children. Funderburg talks about our reaction when we see things that we are not use to. She says,” our reaction ranges from the armchair anthropologist  being desire to unravel  ancestries and common ground to active revulsion at the group boundaries  being violated or in the language of racist days past “. Cheerios reaction could have been a positive reaction,  rather a hindering reaction.
There are many counter arguments that can be made to down the ” commercials”, but there is always a reason why companies make commercials that they know some people in the world may not like and approve of. Cheerio staff and owners may be the only one to ever know any understanding and reasoning behind the commercials with little Gracie. There are more things that Cheerios really tried to break through in their commercial. Many may say it was not the right time but, there is never a wrong time to show something important.
It is crazy to believe that so many people can take things out of proportion and have so much hate and dislike in their hearts. Is believed that when the commercials were broadcast it was very important for Cheerios to get a point across to some people period Cheerios showed diversity in their commercial and it upset a lot of people, though dislike Cheerios did not lose sight in selling their cereal.
